History of Tofino
The community of Tofino is situated on the tip of the Esowista Peninsula in the Clayoquot Sound region on the west coast of Vancouver island. The region takes its name from the First Nations band (Tla-o-qui-aht) which comprises approximately 400,000 hectares of land and marine inlets, which all end up draining into a central marine catchment area.
For several thousand years the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations have made Clayoquot Sound their home. Tofino’s beaches are some of the best in the world which attracts surfers year round. The old-growth rain-forests are dominated by large old trees, principally western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), and western cedar (Thuja plicata), these unique forests represent some of the last remaining examples of old-growth coastal perhumid temperate rainforest to be found in British Columbia.
Anyone who loves the great outdoors from campers, surfers, mountain bikers, whale watchers, fishermen and anyone who wants to be close to nature. In the winter season, the west coast offers some spectacular winter storms that attract storm watchers & surfers.
Resource-based industries such as aquaculture and logging are still present that lead to part of Tofino’s identity. Tofino is constantly adapting to the increased demand for sustainable and environmentally sensitive practices.
The population ranges from approximately 2,516 annual residents but increases through the summer months upwards of 5500 plus.
